The name Blake in Ireland is derived from the name 'de Blaca' which means 'black'. This Gaelic Sept were one of the famous 'Tribes of Galway'. Their ancestor was Richard Caddell who was Sheriff of Connaught in 1303. A branch of the Sept settled in County Kildare where the village of Blakestown still exists to this day.
