The name Breen in Ireland is derived from the native Gaelic Mac Braoin Sept that was located in County Kilkenny. From there they settled into neighbouring Counties, especially County Wexford. The Sept O'Braoin of County Westmeath also anglicized their name as Breen as well as the more usual O'Brien.
