The ancestors of the Carbrey family lived among the Strathclyde-Briton people of the Scottish/English Borderlands. Carbrey is a habitational name derived from a place in the parish of Inveresk, Lothian, which was first recorded in the form Crebarrin, from the words Gaelic "craobhm" meaning "tree," and "barran," meaning "hedge". First found in Midlothian (Gaelic: Meadhan Lodainn), the county which encompassed the city of Edinburgh, and is now the Scottish Council Area of Midlothian in Southeastern Scotland, where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.
