It is derived from the Gaelic "O Druachain," meaning "son of Druachan."First found in County Wexford, where a Maurice O Droughane, a husbandman of Ballincolane, received a pardon in 1569. Very early on, there was an ecclesiastical family called O Druchain in Armagh, and it is thought that there may be a connection between this family and those of the name Drohan.
