The O'Flynns became lords of large areas of counties Cork, Roscommon and Antrim. As warriors, they fought other clans, Viking raiders, Norman invaders, Anglo-Saxon conquerors. They founded churches, built castles and helped keep substantial parts of Ireland Gaelic and free for centuries. At the end of the sixteenth century, the O'Flynns marched with Hugh O'Neill and the other Irish clans in the last great war that ended in the defeat of the Gaelic order.

The name Flynn in Ireland is among the fifty most frequently found in the country. The name is derived from the Gaelic word 'flann' which means 'ruddy'. There were two O'Floinn Septs in County Cork where the name is still very widespread. Lynn and O'Lynn may be variants of this name.

Origen: Irlandés. First found in Tuitre (now Antrim), where according to O'Hart, they were Lords of Tuitre. Today's Irish surnames are underpinned by a multitude of rich histories. The name Flynn originally appeared in Gaelic as O Floinn, which is derived from the word "flann," which means "ruddy." First found in Tuitre (now Antrim), where according to O'Hart, they were Lords of Tuitre. However, the Flynn surname arose independently in several parts of Ireland. Perhaps the oldest line were a Sept of O Floin in Armagh, Ulster, where they were a senior branch of Clanna Rury of Ulidia, claiming descent from King Colla Uais, the famed 4th century Irish King, who in turn was descended from the Heremon royal line.
