Origen: Escocés. The sea-swept Hebrides islands and the west coast of Scotland are the ancestral home of the MacGregor family. Their name comes from the given name Gregory. The Gaelic form of the name was Mac Griogain, which translates as son of Gregory. First found in Argyllshire, where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. The name McGregor in Ireland is usually of Scottish origin having been introduced into Ulster Province by settlers, especially during the seventeenth century. McGregor is sometimes used as a synonym of the name Greer and Grier.

Variantes: MacGregor, MacGregor, MacGrigor, MacGrioghair (Gaelic) y otros.
