Origen: Normando, Galés, Escocés. The name Mathews in Ireland was brought to the country by settlers from England in the seventeenth century. Families with this name settled mostly in Counties Antrim, Dublin and Tipperary where the majority of descendants can still be found today. First found in Glamorganshire, where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.
