Moriarty

Moriartys are descended from the Gaelic Irish Sept, the O' Muircheartaigh. Their place of origin is near Castlemaine, Co. Kerry. In the 12th century the Moriartys were the Kings of West Munster. Today most Moriartys born in Ireland are natives of Co. Kerry.

The name Moriarty in Ireland is derived from the native Gaelic O'Muircheartaigh Sept, taken from a Gaelic word meaning 'navigator'. This Sept are close relatives of the O'Donoghue and O'Mahony Septs and have always been associated with County Kerry in the South-West of the country.
